Segway safaris are guided rides that train you on the use of the Segway and take you over various terrain while showing you sites of interest and some major attractions in Washington.

Your guide, knowledgeable of local history and tourist information, is also a trained Segway demonstrator who will assist you with your Segway riding techniques and provide you with various Segway skills.

IMPORTANT NOTES::

~ All Segway riders must be at least 16 years old and weigh less than 260 lbs.
~ Riders under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
~ All riders are required to take the supervised training and wear supplied safety headgear while on the safari

What shoes/dress should I wear?
Wear comfortable flat shoes as you will be standing for a minimum of an hour at a time. Clothing should be suitable to the weather, realizing that you may generate a breeze with the Segway.

What if it rains?
We want everyone to have fun but if the weather is not cooperating, we do have a couple of options. If it is a light drizzle, we will generally continue with the safari and issue riders ponchos to wear. If heavy thunderstorms are in the forecast, you will be contacted ahead of time to delay, reschedule or even cancel the safari depending on your schedule.

Are there restrictions on where Segways are permitted?
Restrictions on Segway use are controlled by City codes and State laws. In the majority of cases, States limit the minimum age of riders, require riders to ride on sidewalks, classify Segways as pedestrian vehicles and limit the maximum speed for use on the sidewalks to 10 mph. In the District of Columbia, the National Park Service also restricts Segway usage on National Park property. As such, no Segways are allowed on the National Mall or at the national monuments.

What other considerations are there for riders?
WEIGHT: Segway recommends the maximum weight of riders to 260 lbs, as this will ensure maximum battery usage. Some folks may be a little over this weight and it will not generally affect the performance of the Segway.

HEIGHT: The handlebars are adjustable, so height is not a factor.

AGE: There is a minimum age of 16 to ride a Segway in Washington. There is no maximum age, but riders need to keep in mind that they will be standing almost the entire time they are on the Safari.

GENERAL HEALTH: Like all outdoor activities, participants need to be aware of their own limitations and weather conditions such as extreme heat. Please make sure you are hydrated, have eaten and taken any necessary medications prior to your safari. Let your guide know if you have any medical conditions that may impair your driving of the Segway.

What is the top speed?
The top speed for a commercially available Segway is 12.5 mph. However most jurisdictions including DC limit the sidewalk speed to 10 mph.

What is the difference between the Generation 1 model and the Generation 2 model?
The original Generation 1 Segway was launched in 2002. This unit utilizes a steering grip on the left side of the handle bar and has a magnetic key system for start up. The Generation 2 model was introduced in 2006. This model does not use either the key system or the steering toggle. Instead, the entire handle bar tilts to facilitate steering. A remote control device replaces the key system.
